New Market History
The town of New Market, Iowa was
founded in 1882. Since its founding, New Market
has had a diverse history of growth and
development.
When the railroad passed by the former towns of
Memory and Dayton, a new community sprung to
life near the new rail line. Many homes and
local businesses from the two towns relocated to what
became New Market. "Memory
is reported to be moving up to New Market," said
an 1882 article from the Taylor County
Republican. One year later, by April, 1883, New Market's
population grew to 90 houses, 30 businesses and
300 people. New Market thrived and reached a peak
population in 1920 of 745 residents.
Today New Market is proud to be home to 454
residents, a K-8 community school and several local
businesses and churches. It is located in
southwest Iowa's Taylor county on Highway 2.
